Title: New Publication -- Allasso
Post by: Alexandre on June 03, 2011, 02:00:31 AM
Hey, everyone!

If you don't know me yet, I'm Alex!  I've posted here a few times, and I've seen some good writing come from this website.

Well, I've started a new publication called Allasso aimed at bridging the gap between furry and mainstream art and literature.  While it's not paid, I'm offering prizes to the best writing in each category as well as the best overall piece.  If you're interested, please check out the submission guidelines (http://pinkfoxpublications.net/allasso/submission-guidelines/) for more info.  Submissions are through June 30, 2011.

I hope to hear from some of you! :)

Interesting. I'm working on a nice little story right now that I could send in once finished, if you're interested. How many submissions have you gotten so far?

kinda short notice but it does seem interesting.

Hmm... well, I do like prizes. Count me in! I've got just the story to submit, too!

I'm sorry if it seems like short notice.  I've been working to get everything together for a while.  I should have posted here sooner.  At least you know about it now :D

Interesting. I'm working on a nice little story right now that I could send in once finished, if you're interested. How many submissions have you gotten so far?

Not too many.  I have a couple poems and a story that I've formally accepted for the publication.  I would more than love to see what you have.  I have no way of gauging how many submissions I'll receive; I've advertised on several sites now, and I doubt I'll receive many until the last day.  After all, that's what I've done when submitting :D

Hmm... well, I do like prizes. Count me in! I've got just the story to submit, too!

Great! I'm excited to see your work! :)

Just so you know, I have big plans for the publication.  After it is out, I'm gonna advertise all over so people can come see your works.  In addition, I want to get some of these pieces nominated for Ursa Major awards.  While I love Kyell Gold, it's time for some other people to get these prizes (nothing personal).  Give me your best writing.  I'll give you my full dedication.

Sweet! I've got a ton of time this week, so I should have the story ready by then.

I read the deadline at first as June 15, so decided to give it a pass... but since it's actually June 30, I may just give it a go. Do you accept instruction manuals? (I'll doodle in some Disney figures if it helps.) ;D

Awesome! I'll be glad to read what you send in.  :)

Depends on how much literary and artistic merit your manual has.  Actually... Dude, if you can make an instruction manual pertaining to the fandom that works well as a piece of fiction, I'd be thrilled! I've seen somewhat similar things in mainstream fiction, and it'd be a cool thing to see in the furry genre.

That being said, I hope you submit.  :)

Haha, that assumes that I already know a lot about the furry fandom. :) Let me see if I can throw something together within that time. When's your next issue coming out? If I don't make the deadline, I'll try and get it ready for the next one.

The issue is coming out in November/December, I believe, and submissions are due June 30.  And you should be able to do something that at least vaguely relates to the fandom.  I got an awesome poem that's about Dungeons and Dragons, and I feel like that's close enough.  Some are submitting anthro stories, others animal-related pieces.  There's a lot of flexibility :)

Well if manuals are in, would a something like a rider's (dragon rider) guide to dragons be accepted?

Heh, I can't really say until I read it.  If you wanna send it in (maybe even in the "essay" category), go for it!

alright, quick question, what exactly do you want on the cover letter?

Title: Re: New Publication -- Allasso
Post by: Alexandre on June 07, 2011, 04:33:38 AM
Generally, I'd like the cover letter to include the title of the piece(s), the category it's in, and a short bio.

Don't worry too much about that; while I appreciate the professionality of a cover letter, I've also received some very informal e-mails from furs.  One actually only had the file attached with no writing in the body whatsoever.  I figure a lot of submissions I'll receive will be from furs new to the process of submitting, so I'm much more lenient with formalities. ^_~

Just for your information, the grand prize has been announced.  The best overall piece in the whole publication will receive $200.

Hopefully that's enough to get some more of you writing. :)

Oh boy. I literally need that much more to pay for my rent. Dang you and your tantalizing rewards. :)

If I send in an extremely well written cover letter that touches on the issues blighting furry writers, and do it in a perky, poetic, and post-modernist manner (whatever that would be), do I still get a shot at the grand prize? ;D

Post by: Alexandre on June 08, 2011, 05:06:48 PM
Dude, you make me laugh. :D

Seriously, though, send in a piece.  Then you'll be eligible ;)

Though depending on the quality and quirkiness of the letter, I might actually consider publishing it... But it'd have to be really, really good. XD

I already sent a story to New Fables, but I haven't heard back from them and even if it was accepted, it wouldn't be published until next summer anyway. Am I still eligible to send it to you?

Complicated question.  You can, and if they accept it, just go ahead and e-mail me saying that you withdraw it from consideration.  I generally won't accept simultaneous submissions, but starting off I'm a bit more lenient (especially if you ask).

You'll also need to check to see if they accept simultaneous submissions.  If not, I'd suggest you just wait until they accept or reject the piece.  Otherwise, it could hurt your chances of being published there in the future.

$200, that is rent money right there!

This might turn out to be a regular thing submission wise.

Hehe, sounds good! And don't worry if you don't get it in until the 30th.  It'll still get the same kind of consideration :)

Hello fellow Alex,

Not to hjack the thread, but it caught my eye and I thought I'd butt in. Six years ago I was in the same position you were, casting out wide nets to acquire fiction for what would become FANG Vol. 1, and the start of my involvement in furry publishing. I'm delighted you're starting your own publication!

Do you have a distribution plan? Do you have experience in layout and typesetting? Will you be issuing release contracts to the authors or operating on a gentleman's agreement?

Actually, there's a fair few other aspects of book publishing where I could offer advice to help you avoid some of the pitfalls that made my own publication enterprises rather a rocky road. If you'd like a touchstone to help you along, please feel free to contact me at alexfvance@gmail.com.

All you guys, I appreciate the submissions!

Alex, I'm currently at Anthrocon, so it may be a day or two before I send you an email.  However, I would love to get some insights from you about what helped you the most.  I like to take risks, but it's good to know what risks I can avoid :)

Just FYI

You have less than one week to submit! We're accepting submissions until 11:59 PM (PST) on June 30! I'd love to be inundated with submissions these last few days!

Hey, there's no problem with the delay! Take until 11:59 PM on June 30 if you need to finish up the last details! I'll be excited to read it :)

So, how does the submission pool look?

Title: Re: New Publication -- Allasso
Post by: Alexandre on July 01, 2011, 05:10:36 AM
It's actually looking alright! I've received a majority of the submissions from within the fandom so far, but I've also had some from outsiders.  I think we're going to have a nice combination of furry and literary texts :)

Title: Re: New Publication -- Allasso

Sweet, sweet! Large submission pools are always nice. We were talking about New Fables on another board -- they received so few submissions this year that they had to skip publication and hold off 'till 2012.

Looking over Malin's post, I get the feeling that they didn't receive very few submissions this year so much as very few publishable ones. Which is a different matter entirely.

Hopefully Allasso's maiden run fared better - and from the sound of it, it did. Grats in advance, Alex, and looking forward to reading your first issue. :) (So sorry I wasn't able to send something in, by the way. I'm a slow writer, and my plate happened to be full.)

Dude, that's how life happens! Sometimes things are busy, so hopefully you make the next deadline :)

I actually have received quite a few that I consider publishable! I don't have the largest pool, but the quality actually surprised me.  There was only one person who submitted that made me say, "Uhh... No" right away; that was the first submission I got, and I thought, "Gah... This is gonna be a rough ride." Luckily, I was wrong :D

Good luck to everyone! The next week or so, I'll decide on what will be published.

*snickers* Telling a writer not to be nervous while his work is being inspected is like asking the sky to be blue. Writers are little neurotic nutjobs by default.

Best tip I ever got: Just forget you ever submitted work. It's just like auditions -- best not to think about it.

Indeed. Let me take you back for a moment to some 20 years ago, when it was possible to submit a story (on paper, typewritten or at best printed by a word processor) and look in the mailbox every day for half a year before getting a rejection letter. Or, if you were fortunate, an acceptance and a publication agreement to sign that promised "payment upon publication" of perhaps $50 or even $100. Then you could look in the mailbox every day for another two years before a copy of the publication with your story finally appeared. And then, a couple of months more before the check arrived.

Obviously, you couldn't sit around biting your nails. You had to just leave a note somewhere that story X was sent off to editor Z on date Y. And then forget about it and start writing the next one.  :D

Alex, will you be publishing the journal online? In print? How much would it cost? Would you be able to ship to Europe?

I have plans to do both online and print, so you'll be able to see it one way or another.  I've talked to Alex Vance recently, and I would probably be able to do a print-on-demand type of publication (I'd receive less money, but I don't really care about that right now). You'd definitely be able to get a copy over seas.

Also, congrats, Justin! :)

At the risk of stealing Alexandre's thunder, I'll bump this topic to announce that the second issue of Allasso is out as of today. Available in print or for Kindle at Amazon as "Allasso, volume 2: Saudade" and online at www.pinkfoxpublications.net.

I'll just say it has some very good new stuff in it, by names you will recognize and others you may not know yet.
